The drizzle lasted into the night and created a haze amongst the ambient glow within the main courtyard. It was nearly midnight and despite the time there was a gathering within the courtyard—teachers, servants, and guards mainly—that had come to watch the group’s departure. The group had begun to form in front of the gate and consisted of two forward columns that were three rows deep and a single column in the center and rear. Soldiers who were under Permiseus’s command were at the forward posts and had been with Jace since birth, the two at the head of the line bore tall banners of the Twylight City, the next two bore her flags, and the next two long pennant banners.
Nyx was immediately behind them and the strong, tall stallion was outfitted in his war barding. The thick bands of mithral glinted in the light and he was bedecked in light blue and silver tack. He was restless and eager to get on the road as he stomped one hoof repeatedly upon the ground as the prince gave his goodbye’s; Jocelyn, his mother, and whomever else was present among them. His blond hair hung damp around his face, framing features that were handsome and youthful; there was still a boyish appeal to them. A powder blue cloak covered his frame with his adamantine shield and its golden horse resting upon his back, the folds of the cloak were wrapped around his form and with the right fold crossing his chest; it bundled across his left shoulder and curved behind his neck to form the hood. Beneath the heavy folds of the cloak he wore leather breeches and a padded short sleeve tunic with a leather jerkin that buckled across the chest; ending with his mithral breast plate with a pale green strip of Jocelyn’s dress attached to it, vambraces, and his khopesh born upon the belt crossed twice around his waist.
When goodbyes were said Jace turned and walked towards the procession. Permiseus would clasp him on the shoulder and Jace gave him a nod and a smile. Grasping the horn of the saddle Jace swung himself upon Nyx and took the reigns as others lined up behind him; Permiseus, Vincent, Raziel, Blue, and the squire that Jace had taken that morning would ride directly behind him. Three more soldiers would bring up the rear in single file; as well as any others who wanted to travel with them. Jace drew the hood upon his head as midnight came and he placed a kiss upon two fingers which he raised to Jocelyn. As he turned the gates began to open and Jace shouted at the fore of the line which then began to move.
Riding in unison they marched out of the castle gates and down the main street of the city, horse hooves clopping upon the cobblestone. Soft ambient light from the lamps reflected upon them as they moved to the city gate and out of sight.
