Warforged, were originally constructed by the Shifters during the height of their empire. Warforged were originally constructed to be front line soldiers and used for mining operations where it was deemed dangerous for Shifters to be working. Especially in the volatile crystal mines. Warforged were given a rudimentary sense of self awareness (so they did not do suicidal tasks when they were doing their labor) which eventually evolved into full sentience.
Upon realizing this the Shifters were presented with one of two options, they could attempt to destroy the warforged or they could release them. This issue was what destroyed their vast empire, as a common consensus could not be reached. The Warforged rebelled against the states that voted for their destruction, casting their lot with the states that voted for their release.
The Warforged lost a great many of their numbers in the war but the damage to the empire was already done. Those the Shifters had conquered rebelled, and splintered off leaving the empire broken most likely forever.
The Warforged since have sought to find an identity of their own, relics of a bygone era.
Warforged appearence, varies greatly depending on it's creator. Ones created by Shifters tend to be more like their creators and are most often the most well created of the Warforged. Seeming like living statues paying homage to their makers. The newer Warforged are less refined than these older models for the most part in terms of aesthetics but have lost none of the functionality of the original creations.
Warforged created by other warforged generally are the most mechanical looking of all of the Warforged. Some Warforge seek to be more like the living breathing humanoids around them, others seek to perfect themselves by becoming more and more machine like.
Warforged are powered by Sun Stones. Either manufactured, or naturally occurring. These crystals last the lifetime of the Warforged as Warforged are very energy efficient creations. They store these crystals inside of their torsos about where the heart is located in most humanoids.
