Praetorian Guard
Unlike the guard of ancient Rome the Praetorian Guard of Karisfael was formed by Jace Aradaine upon his ascension to the throne with the sole purpose of protecting the royal family and are completely devoid of any political involvement. It was set forth that each King should have his own guard handpicked from the elite of the Jaguar and Eagle Orders, when they reform, who had proven themselves utterly loyal to the King (or Queen should the throne pass to a wife or daughter). It is possible for guard to pass from one monarch to another only if the successor chooses to adopt the previous monarch's guard.
The First Praetorian Guard was formed of ten men, including their leader, who served as King Aradaine's royal guard since birth in the Twylight City. Permiseus Vicorue, who headed the King's original guard, serves as Captain and commands the force of nine men whose roles double as honor guard and mounted cavalry to protect the King during travel.
The First Praetorian Guard is in need of expansion with the King slated to marry and rumors of a child on the way, plans to do so are in the works by scouting for elite fighters amongst the Karistaari hunting class until the Orders are restored.
Praetorians are heavily armed with gear that has been brought from blacksmiths of the Twylight City, a practice that will continue until the Karistaari can re-establish their skill at metallurgy. Armor consists of leather breeches with light greeves and a short sleeved red tunic; all secured with a roman style balteus. Chest armor consists of a mithral cuirass that has been lightly coated in bronze and polished for effect; this cuirass is similar to the hardened leather cuirass that the King will be introducing to the Eagle Order upon their reformation. Each Praetorian is also issued a set of leather and bronze-plated mithral vambraces, as well as a brilliant red cloak of Karisfael's finest cotton that functions as a Cloak of Resistance +1. Finally the Praetorian employs the use of a mithral helm in the style of the Greek Corinthian helm.
Praetorians employ a range of weapons including a spear and two sword types. The spear is similar to the roman hasta pura and used while performing as honor guard outside of the throne room or royal quarters. They also make use of a falcata with a phoenix handle which is a forward curved sword with the cutting power an axe used for cleaving through armor, or a short sword, often with a sheild modeled after the Roman scuttum. This sheild is tall and semi-curved like a section of a cylinder, they offer maximum protection to the Praetorian and can be used to form a very effective wall around their charge.
It can often be assumed that meeting a Praetorian in combat is equivalent to facing a Level 10-15 Fighter.
