During the time of the Racial Sundering of the Sidhe, the Eladrin remained within the Feywild, the elves and Drow descended from the Sidhe that left into other planes. The Drow went deep into the recesses of the Feywild, moving to one of the crossover points into the Shadowfell. While the Drow lived in the Shadowfell it gradually changed the Sidhe who dwelt there. Eventually their skin changed to a jet black appearence their hair turning white and their eyes, red, blue or purple.
The Sidhe's power changed as well, becoming a natural result of the Drow being able to exist in the Shadowfell. Drow's power became a DarkFire or Cloud of darkness. This is not all that the Shadowfell changed with the Drow though. The Shadowfell is a dark twisted mirror of reality. This has influenced the behavior of the Drow, tremendously over the milennia. Drow are considered the darker cousins of their more aloof Eladrin cousins.
Elves and Eladrin consider the Drow as a twisted hedonistic mockery of what it means to be Sidhe. The Drow do not acknowledge Winter or Summer Court, but their own court of Webbed Shadows. Drow revere spiders as a form of divine animal. Drow never kill spiders and spiders actually return the favor, even large ones that logically would be able to kill a Drow. To kill a spider is to not only revoke this mutual respect but to invoke a life long series of misfortunes. (or so it's believed) Drow live in a matriarchial society, with males generally considered second class citizens.
Drow even by fey standards are treacherous and deceitful creatures, but at the same time perhaps they are the most honest, because they do not deny this nature in the least.
Drow have over time, moved from deep in the Shadowfell and close to cross over points near the material plane. Mostly due to the encroachment of truly nightmarish creatures that the Drow would sooner not deal with if they can help it. This has given the Drow their association with dwelling in caves and dark places of the world, though truthfully they dwell close to any cross over point that is conveniently located for them to do so at. Drow deal in slavery and various drug trades. Most Drow possess a cruel streak and a wicked side to their personalities. The Drow do not worship any god in particular that does not suit their purpose, and is most often a local god to whereever it is they are dwelling.
Drow typically become adventurers for a few reasons. Some do it to escape slavery, some because their family or House has been disgraced. Others do it to learn more about the world, and yet others do it to right any wrongs they might have committed.
